Robert Philips and Sophie Birkhead, from Wisbech St Mary, Cambs, want to create Britain’s biggest disability friendly fishing lake on nearly two acres of land near the village. It would have 35 specially-adapted fishing pegs, parking for up to 40 vehicles and be mainly stocked with carp.
Plans are currently being considered by Fenland District Council and if it gets the go-ahead, the lake could be open as early as next March.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but have never had the land to do it,” Mr Phillips said. “I know a lot of disabled anglers, and there are not enough facilities for them. It’s always two or three pegs chucked in the corner in the worst spot with no fish.
“We’re providing something where disabled anglers can fish alongside the able-bodied.” He added.
