PREDATORS

Predators is a ten part series on Discovery Home & Leisure. It studies a range of well-known predatory fish, analysing how they operate and how to catch them. Hosted by angling journalist Kevin Green, the series captures the live drama and battle of wits anglers face when fishing for predators.

The series features great underwater camera-work, showing the predators in action, as well as all the facts you need on each fish and advice on which bait and methods to catch it.

THIS WEEK: BASS, DISCOVERY HOME & LEISURE, 11PM

If the first episode’s anything to go by, Discovery Home and leisure’s new 10-part Predators series is going to be seriously watchable.

Kevin Green kicks off down the road from me, seeking sea bass from the surf at West Runton, near Cromer in North Norfolk.

He teams up with Norfolk distance caster and writer Paul Kerry, to explore the rocky beach at low tide.

Paul gives us a whistle-stop tour of the bass’s favourite hunting grounds, before the baits go in.

Scientist Simon Scott gives us a quick Predator Profile, while we’re waiting for a bite.

“It can take 20 years for a bass to reach 10lbs, which is why catch and release is so important,” he says.

And it isn’t long before Kevin’s rod goes over and his first bass hits the beach.

“If you get into the head of these fish and understand them and how they hunt you can catch them,” he says. “I love bass, I love bass fishing. You can’t beat it, fantastic.”

In Part Two Kevin climbs aboard Solent-based charter skipper Roger Bayzand’s boat for a trip to the Channel Islands.

After feathering some sandeels for bait, the pair are soon in action again drifting livebaits over a sandbank.

Roger shows the long drifting rig before lowering it over the side and the rods are soon bending again.

Kevin Green is an unobtrusive presenter who asks the right questions and lets the fish do the talking.

One way and another Discovery have crammed a lot into half an hour. Predators is fast moving, fun and fascinating.
