QUEST ULTRA POWER BELT PACK
Price: £ 59.95, Includes Battery Pack, Charger, Car lead, Tripod Mounting Strap, and Delivery

The problem with digital cameras is that they eat batteries with a vengeance and many anglers, or at least those who love to take lots of shots, have run out of power long before they’ve ran out of shot storage, especially if you’re like me, taking several of one subject and deleting loads of shots until I get one that’s spot-on. This means they either have to make do with the shots they’ve taken, or take a few spare batteries. When the camera uses an expensive rechargeable that isn’t always an option.

Which means the Quest Ultra-power battery pack could be just the thing for you. It stores enough power for you to be able to use your camera all day long, probably longer, with the LED display switched on. It has been proven in tests to outlast, in its life-time, at least 2,500 sets of the most powerful disposable AA batteries on the market. The environmentally friendly Nickel Metal Hydride based product also powers the camera for up to ten times longer than 1,800mAh AA batteries on a single charge.

The pack has a huge 4,100mAh capacity, weighs just 13oz, and there is a model to suit virtually all digital cameras. It comes complete with charger, car lead, and a tripod mounting belt. The belt pack is the smallest and lightest of its peers.

The power cord to the camera allows for interchangeable coaxial plugs and the three that come with it will fit the majority of cameras on the market.

Interestingly, the pack can be used to power any device that uses 4 AA size batteries or a 6 volt input.

A completely flat battery needs about four hours to recharge to full capacity on the fast charge. It can be left safely on charge indefinitely and will reduce to a trickle charge once capacity is reached. The charger also has a recondition mode which should be used occasionally when performance noticeably reduces. The 12v cigarette lighter cord means it can be charged in a car or boat.

The Quest Ultra-power pack, at under £ 60 inclusive for the Economy model, is claimed to be the perfect battery solution for today’s power hungry digital cameras: “This particular rechargeable battery system is hugely popular,” says Quest spokesman, former professional photographer, Alan Ainger, “because it allows one to stop worrying about batteries and get on with the photography. Even with the camera’s display permanently running and all automatic functions switched on and a microdrive attached, the Ultra-power pack will provide power at least all day before needing a recharge.”

The product is the highest capacity Nickel Metal Hydride external camera power solution on the market and suitable for virtually all digital cameras. In addition to its competitive price, it is compact, lightweight and can be charged equally effectively from a mains source, lighter socket in a car or boat, or from Quest’s Field Power Pack, which facilitates recharging in the remotest locations: “Rechargeable camera batteries rechargeable anywhere” boasts the company web-site, www.QuestUK.net, “Using lightweight add-on packs and accessories, you recharge on the move and enjoy extended shooting sessions without interruption – wherever you are!”

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

This battery pack has the potential to save you a lot of money if you take lots of pictures, and will also give you the convenience of being able to have the LED display switched on all the time without the dreaded fear of flat batteries.

From what I’ve seen so far, even when using lots of flash and the motorised zoom a lot, and taking large images, a full day’s use with the LED display on all the time is no problem at all.

Although the pack weighs 13oz it won’t be noticed much when it’s attached to your belt, but what you will notice is that the camera itself will be much lighter as there won’t be any batteries inside it.

Definitely a must-have accessory for the fanatical digital photographer.
