Final Round Lakeview 4/11/01
The final round had come around already as we gathered at Lakeviewon a misty/drizzly morning. “”This will clear away before we start”” weagreed, optimistically. And it did, even before the draw. It was niceto see that attendance had not dropped off towards the end of theseries with 22 signing up for today’s torture. Everyone was alreadythinking about the Winter league. The usual island and open watersections were pegged and the draw finally got under way after muchdiscussion about venues. After all the moans about the state of thepegs, which had certainly not improved since our last visit, we gotstarted at 10:30.
Things were very slow with only odd carp putting in an appearance.Simon Poynter had wisely opted to go all-out for silver fish and wasquietly putting together a weight of skimmers. The only man to bedoing any serious damage was Alan (The Bolton Bagger) Farnworth atpeg 13 who had the carp lined up at 4m.
At the whistle it was clear he had walked it with 8 carp for 35lbtaken on maggot more than double the weight of his nearest rival.
Second place went to Graham Curnow (Newtown Angling) notching uphis sixth section win from island peg 6 with 17lb 2oz. Meanwhile, onpeg 26, Simon Poynter (Milo Bill Knott Bookies) was strugglingagainst yet another sporting injury this time to his eye. Despitethis, his silverfish approach paid dividends putting 13lb of mainlyskimmers on the scales to claim the third spot. Simon fished veryfine with maggot over groundbait and lost only one carp.
The next three weights were all very close. John Shirley (PhoenixA) 10lb 14oz peg 4, Ben Field (Bait Bunker) 10lb 12oz peg 14 and PeteWalker (St Columb Magic) 10lb 10oz peg 33.
So next it was off to the bar for a few drinks and thepresentations. Overall league champion was Graham Curnow who led formost of the series. Runner-up was Simon Poynter with John Shirleysneaking into third place and pushing last year’s winner (Myself)into 4th.
My thanks to everyone who took part in the league and made it suchan enjoyable job. Only a few cock-ups this year but hopefully we willlearn from them and look forward to next year’s league. But beforethat I’m off to plan the Winter league, see you soon.
