The second of Cornwall’s Winter Leagues kicked off this weekend at Porth Reservoir near Newquay. It was another bitterly cold day that welcomed the 12 teams to one of Cornwall’s most well known venues.

The water had plenty of colour, but the overnight frost was always going to effect the way this venue would fish.

A modest 5lb 13oz was the top weight on the day and won Dave Bonney (Silver Ball) the ‘B’ section. ‘A’ section was won by Chris White (Phoenix ‘B’) with 4lb 1oz, whilst Simon Pointer (Silver Ball) took the ‘C’ section with 4lb 12oz.

Strong winds across the water put most anglers on the tip, with no one bait outfishing another. When the pole was able to be used it proved the most rewarding of methods, accounting for most of Dave’s fish.

Top team on the day were Silver Ball with 31 points
2nd was Clive’s Tackle 28
3rd RNAS Culdrose 26
Threemilstone (TMS) Toads were 4th with 25.
TMS Frogs shared 5th spot with Phoenix “B” on 22 points
Lakeview Magic were 7th with 19.
8th were Retallack 18
Phoenix “A” 14.

The last 3 places going to Gwinear Peasants 11 and an eleventh place tie for OB Joyful and St Columb who finished with 10 points each.

The next round is at the prolific Gwinear Lakes, Windsor Pool where the weights will without doubt be much higher.
