Match 3, Venue: Upper Tamar Lakes, Kilkampton.

South West Lakes (formerly South West Water) run this venue and looked after the anglers really well, providing transport to ship gear around this large water.

The lakes suffered on the day due to the high winds, although the forecast rain did not appear and that was the highlight of the day.

The day started off bad when O.B Joyful and RNAS Culdrose announced they were a man down. OB’s guy had fallen ill with the flu and the team could not get a replacement. Culdrose’s man had not turned to. (NAVY saying), meaning, the tw** had not turned up! Bob Yeomans (RNAS Captain) was not impressed as one would imagine. More on this story to follow.

As most match anglers will know the importance in any match is to get the presentation right. The conditions during this match did nothing to help the struggling angler. Yours truly fished the first two hours with a dry net, when all around are doing the biz. Bob Noble fishing section ‘B’ two pegs away from me had netted two good looking fish and seemed to be walking away with the section. More on this later but keep in mind the RNAS story!

Chris Bailey (TMS Toads) had spent the weekend at the venue practising with his team mates, Don Kellow and me. Chris is a real class act, and got to grips with the venue real quick and secured ‘A’ section for the TMS Toads. Second in his section was league guru Phil Waters (Gwinear Peasants) and third was Steve Robinson (RNAS Culdrose).

‘B’ Section was won by Bob Yeomans (Culdrose) who fished the waggler over his pole line to win the section by 1oz from Bob Noble (Gwinear Peasants). Your truly who was dry nets for two hours got it a little together to finish 5th in section, which is not bad when at 1hr 45 minutes into the match I was practising my blanking speech.

Section ‘C’ was fished in the Marina shallows and was won by Mike Frank (Silver Ball) who had best weight on the day with 6lb 4oz. A special mention has to go to my team mate Don Kellow in ‘C’ section. For those who know Don, outside of the Cornish match scene, and many do, due to his fantastic results at Gwinear in the days of pellet and paste. Don has been suffering with his health of late, but he secured 3rd spot in ‘C’ section off an indifferent draw. Plus he practised the venue with Chris and me in the worst kind of conditions, plus having to make sure me and Bailey were safe and sound after a night on the beer (we stayed over as the venue was nearly in England – Cornish joke!)

Thank you Don.

Top team on the day, TMS Toads, my side, 30 points. 2nd Gwinear Peasants 28 points. RNAS Culdrose with two anglers finished with 22 points 6th overall, What a difference a man makes!

Next round of the Real Cornwall League is at Lakeview in two weeks time.

Gwinear League, Match 4

Venue- Gwinear Fisheries
As with the RCWL, this venue suffered with the high winds sweeping over Cornwall.

Guy Manton (Milo Oddballs) won the day with 89lb 6oz from peg 27. Guy open his attack on feeder on switched later on to pole to gain the top prize on the day £ 167.

Second was one of Cornwall’s favourite Scouser’s Dave Walton (St Ives) who feeder fished and margin poled his way to 69lb 4oz. More in keeping for Dave, he had Gwinear League Top Rod, Martin Cocks in his section. But Dave got the better of the banter and the fishing on the day. Tim Simmons also St Ives took 3rd stop with 61lb 9oz.

Top Team on the day were St Ives with 28 points, with Milo Oddballs and Bill Knott’s Bookmakers 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Overall Cock’s tackle still hold on to their slender one point lead from Milo Oddballs. Bill Knott’s Bookmakers moved up the table with a good day’s team results to be third.

On gaining the results from Billy (which is always a good laugh) he tells me that he has been contacted by Ziggy Gregorek of Angler’s Paradise. Zig is arranging his charity match and there is no better personality than Billy to get money out of people. Fully details will be posted later.
