Round 6, Gwinear 24/3/02

At last a dry day and possibly a chance to dry out my kit from the previous two outings. A change of wind direction from the previous round fished here two weeks ago looked like putting a different spin on the proceedings.

And so it turned out to be with the cool South-easterly making the fishing quite hard. Most of the top weights came from pegs sheltered from the wind. Nestling behind the bridge on peg 27 (C1), Team Newtown’s Barry Little worked with pole and catmeat taking carp to 8lb. Despite losing several fish, his 69lb 7oz was enough to secure the top honours after having moaned about not drawing on the island at the start. He who moans….

Ben Field (Bait Bunker) made the most of having the wind off his back at peg 38 taking second spot and B-section honours with 60lb 4oz of pole and feeder caught carp. Just along the bank at peg 42, Atlantic Angling rod Roger Cannock used pole and catmeat to amass a 52lb net good enough for third overall and A-section win.

Mike Yates (Newtown Angling) was forth with a level 44lb from unfancied peg 51 on the side of the “Banjo”. Another unfancied peg 30 threw up the fifth weight for Newtown Angling’s Phil Watters with 35lb 15oz. Last round winning peg 28 by the bridge was only good enough for sixth on the day with 34lb 12oz for Wayne Ledbury (St Columb Imports).

Teamwise, it was another close match with TMS Newts grabbing glory on 32 points. Team Newtown just edged out St Columb Imports on weight to take the runner-up prize, both teams scoring 31 points.

The next round is on the controversial Argal reservoir, an untried match venue. Better known in the speci circuit, this large open water holds massive shoals of roach and rudd as well as pike and carp. It should make for an interesting match, which could be a great success or a disaster, tune in next month to find out.
