I’ve just got back from a short trip to France, fishing a series of new lakes.Unfortunately I’ve been asked not to name the lakes or area, so apologies if I’m a little sketchy on details.

Beautiful scale pattern – on the fish that is!

I met up with fellow FISHINGmagic member Phil Inzani on the Monday afternoon at the lakes.

The weather had turned quite cold when we reached the lakes. The water temp was very low and there was a chill wind blowing across the lake, as well as an almost constant drizzle that occasionally sparked into a downpour.

Anyway, enough about how poor the weather and fishing was, at least it gave Phil and myself a chance to put the world to rights.

I had two takes, the first during an amazing storm on the Thursday night, that saw me striking into thin air, and the second at about 9am Friday morning. This saw me connect with a fish that gave a very slow plodding scrap that lasted about 15 minutes.

Successful rig was 15lb Snakeskin, size 6 Nash Gata and popped-up maize. This was fished over about 3 pints of maize and hemp (thanks Phil).

The rain stopped and the sun shone, just in time for the self-portraits.

Not massive at 31lb 2oz, but I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a beautifully scaled fish that was most welcome in the cold of December.
