A rare fishing reel hooked a top price of £ 4,600 at an auction of antique and modern fishing tackle.
Sold by Shropshire sporting auctioneers, Mullock Madeley, the Ustonson reel, dating back to the 1840s, reflected the strong market.
More than 150 people attended the sale at a new Midlands venue at Cosford. Auctioneer, John Mullock explains: “We had a good number of new faces, with in excess of 100 registering to bid. In addition we already had a considerable number of commission bids in the bag from as far afield as Japan, the USA and Europe.
“Throughout the 600 lot auction it was evident that quality items in tip top condition won the day.

Cooper sold for £ 820. Caught on the River Avon October 1921 – Weight 17lb 2oz and 16lb 8oz. |
Uncannily, a rare copy of “The Compleate Angling Booke” (spelt correctly) realised £ 700 exactly 108 years to the day, after it had been dedicated, by the author, to the printer on November 18, 1892.
Collectible reels and lures commanded good prices with a Hardy 1912 salmon reel leaping to £ 370, nearly double its guide price and a collection of five Hardy reels, sold individually, grossed in excess of £ 1,600, while scarce lures by makers Allcock and Gregory averaged £ 145.
Other items of note included a bronze bust of Sir Isaak Walton, which realised £ 340, cased fish sold from £ 500 to £ 820 and angler’s knives up to £ 230.
Grossing in excess of £ 45,000 at the auction, John Mullock comments: “There is a tremendous market for antique angling tackle. Collectors are ready and willing to pay serious money for good quality items, in good condition.”
