A Glasgow University research team, after observing salmon at the FRS Freshwater Laboratory in Pitlochry, Scotland, are claiming that fish could be a lot smarter than people give them credit for. 
Dr Sian Griffiths said, ‘The traditional old wive’s tale of goldfish being stupid is really in the past now. We are starting to see quite a lot of evidence that fish are able to make quite complex decisions.’
‘It’s interesting work – fish can decide when to leave and when to join a shoal, and make decisions about things much more complicated than we thought.’
Anglers have known that for years.
