**Real Reviews by Real Anglers**
The Rod Hutchinson Vice Rig Hooks are anything but inadequate. The first thing that impressed me with these hooks was the packaging. On opening the packet I found a comprehensive advice on how to use the Vice Rig Hooks for both bottom and surface fishing.
The hook itself is light but still very strong. It has a slight in-turned eye, which I found helped make the hook turn when sucked into the fish’s mouth, therefore increasing the fish-hooking potential.
Although the Vice Rig Hook is particularly aimed at carp anglers, I first used the hooks on a barbel trip on the River Dove. As you will know the power of a barbel is a true test for any hook and I thought, ‘If this hook can handle a big Dove barbel then it can handle anything!’
Soon enough the hook was put to the test when I had a violent take from what could only be a barbel The first run of the fish was breathtaking as it tried to seek the sanctuary of the downstream overhanging willows. The only way I could ensure that I could keep hold of this fish was to lock up and hang on for dear life! To cut a long story short, the hook did its job perfectly and I managed to turn the fish and soon landed an 8lbs-plus Dove barbel. That afternoon I was fortunate to land four fish all between 7 and 9lbs and all on the same hook. The hook point remained sharp and every fish was well hooked, with no fear of pulling out.
I also tried the hook on my carping trips and when coupled with the no-knot knot I found the hook very impressive and so far I haven’t suffered any hook pulls.
Another big test of the Vice Hook was during my annual carp fishing trip to Canada in September. I feel that the Canadian river carp fight harder and longer than any carp in the world and on previous trips I have suffered broken hooks from some of the larger specimens. I chose the size four hook as I use a double 20mm boilie over there and attached it to a 35lbs braided hook length. The hooks held up very well and I landed many powerful fish of 30lbs-plus, therefore giving the hooks a real test in the hardest of circumstances.
As the Vice Rig Hook is so light it is also ideal to use when surface fishing and I enjoyed a great deal of success using the size 8 hook with a single large mixer biscuit during the summer. It tends to hang perfectly under the floater and the carp showed no caution when approaching and taking the hookbait.
To sum up, the Rod Hutchinson Vice Rig Hooks, I would say that they are a quality product from a quality company. They have been well designed and tested and give you the confidence needed in your gear when after big fish. With these hooks you can relax knowing that when that buzzer goes or the tip pulls around, that you have a hook you can rely on.
