Preston’s Neil McIver has upped the River Ribble’s barbel best to 14lb 5oz. Only last week we reported that Brian Beaven had set the record at 13lb 11oz.
Neil, who has netted more than 20 double-figure barbel from the river over the years fished sweetcorn to take the big barbel from a flooded river.
Last week Ribble regular Gary Knowles said, “The fish currently holding the river record will almost certainly be over 14lb in weight by March and if they continue to steadily increase in size, and I see no reason why this should not be the case, then we could be looking at a 15lb Ribble barbel within a year or two.”
Of this latest capture Gary said. “I don’t think any angler who fishes the Ribble regularly will be surprised. It’s a great fish and the 15-pounder may not be so far away.”
