The EA restocking programme is really in full swing at the moment and tomorrow (13 December) Environment Agency fisheries staff will be introducing 2,250 barbel into the River Aire at Apperley Bridge, Armley and Thwaites Mill.

The fish originate from the EA facility at Calverton, Nottinghamshire and are being introduced into the Aire as part of an ongoing restocking programme to boost recovering populations in rivers where water quality is improving.

Fisheries officer Peter Mischenko said:

“These fish introductions continue to reflect the great improvements in water quality in the river.

The work is part of the Environment Agency’s river restocking programme, which is intended to develop a sustainable fish population.

We will continue our other work, including managing obstructions such as weirs to ease the passage of fish, so our rivers can continue to improve for all users of our watercourses.”
