Letter to Steve Pope, Chairman of the Barbel Society, from Steve Beech, Secretary, Winsford and District Anglers AssociationDear Steve, Please give all the Barbel Society Committee the sincere thanks of everybody associated with Winsford and District Anglers Association for your extremely generous donation of £ 500 towards the restocking of the River Dane. It gave me tremendous personal pride during our April committee meeting in handing over the cheque. The money will be placed in our accounts and barbel will be purchased as soon as practicable. You will be aware that the pollution incident on the River Dane last September was classed at category one level. Through the efforts of like-minded dedicated anglers, including me, who look upon the Barbel Society with admiration and are proud to wear their logo, we are beginning to turn a disaster into something that we can slowly begin to class as a triumph. Much more remains to be done but we have already agreed and secured a major stocking commitment from the E.A. I am in no doubt whatsoever that the involvement of the Barbel Society, in addition to the Anglers Conservation Association, has influenced the authorities concerned into taking us seriously. The pollution incident is now in the hands of the E.A. legal Department and I have submitted two statements on behalf of W & DAA. At our recent annual general meeting in March a motion that I put forward was accepted, this was “That no barbel are to be placed into a keepnet unless in a bona fide angling competition.” It was always going to be difficult to get through as the Association has a large match-angling contingent. I gave a very passionate speech on the welfare of barbel and at the voting stage only one member was against. I would like to dedicate this achievement to the Barbel Society, without whose inspiration this would not have been possible. Yours Sincerely, Steve Beech Secretary, Winsford and District Anglers Association |
