The TAC volunteers lined up ready to goEnvironment Agency West Thames Fisheries Officers Matt Drew and Stuart Keable worked with ten volunteers from Thames Anglers’ Conservancy (TAC) to place seven tons of gravel (10, 20 and 40mm) into the channel on Penton Hook Lock Island near Staines to improve spawning habitat for a wide range of species including chub and dace.

Raking the gravel into the bed of the channelThe one ton bags were delivered onto the island by barge and the volunteers used barrows, rakes and shovels to place within the channel.

The day followed channel clearance operation carried out by TAC several weeks ago and  forms part of an ongoing collaboration between TAC and the Agency to deliver Water Framework Directive outcomes and to promote angling on the Thames.
