The River Waveney Trust will hold its first meeting at the Swan Hotel in Harleston, Norfolk on 29 March 29 with none other than John Wilson opening proceedings.
The trust was formed by Harleston sailor, Geoff Doggett and river campaigner, Dave Gladwell who hope to gain charitable status for the organisation which, it is hoped, will be empowered to secure funding and manage assets such as small pockets of land along the river.
Mr Doggett said:
“The majority of the Waveney and its tributaries have failed to achieve good ecological status under the EU Water Framework Directive with excessive weed growth choking sections of the river around Bressingham, Diss and Scole and rubbish being left uncleared at Diss.
The Trust will be working with a number of organisations including the Rivers Trust, Broads Authority, Essex and Suffolk Water, South Norfolk Council, the Environment Agency and Mid-Suffolk District Council.”
