BOB’S BIG BARBEL

RMC Specimen Group Records Officer Bob Hornegold proved once again that he can catch them just as well as he can write them down by netting this River Lea specimen of 11lb 1oz.

Bob fished in the company of his usual angling companion Gary Newland and presented a piece of flavoured meat on one rod and an M-Tech boilie on the other – it was the boilie that the big fish favoured.

With the river high, warm and carrying a lot of colour the Lea has been in excellent form.

VENUE BEST BARBEL FOR GEOFF

Chingford angler Geoff Bowen is currently the toast of the Lea Valley as last Saturday afternoon he banked the first 14lb barbel ever recorded from the historic river.

Fishers Green regular Geoff is a master of the rolling meat method and visiting the venue last week Geoff found the river fining down but retaining colour and with an excellent temperature of 49 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite a howling wind the conditions were perfect for barbel to be on the feed.

A big lump of Bacon Grill flavoured with curry powder and fished on a size 2 Raptor to 8lb line was the method with a 14g flat weight stopped a foot from the hook completing the set up.

Having landed doubles from the Green in both of his previous sessions Geoff was confident of success and a fish of 6lb 7oz shortly after lunch signalled that the fish were indeed feeding. Another roll of the bait through the same swim brought a gentle pluck on the line and Geoff struck into a powerful fish that he knew was a double straight away.

With no major snags Geoff was able to pile on the pressure but had to get into the water to successfully net the fish when his landing net head worked loose from the pole as he first tried to land it!

The barbel was weighed and witnessed at a weight of 14lb 2oz before being returned to the river where she was rested and fully revived before being allowed to power off back to her home.
