The EA report that:
The snow and ice couldn’t keep the enforcement officers away from the organisation’s planned blitz on illegal fishing and a total of 47 anglers were seen bracing the cold in the Norfolk and Cambridgeshire rivers that were visited. Four (8.5 per cent) did not have a fishing licence.
Lesley Robertson, Environmental Crime Team Leader, said:
“Those issued with offence tickets will almost certainly end up in court. We monitor the river all year round, no matter the weather, and our fisheries enforcement officers were out in the cold last Saturday.
We were pleased to see that most anglers had valid rod licences, as all the money the Environment Agency receives from sales is spent improving fisheries.
Those law-abiding anglers were very happy to see our officers out on the ground and were encouraged by our continued stance against illegal fishing.”
The blitz targeted waterways including the River Great Ouse, the River Lark and the River Wissey.
