FISHINGmagic regular Ron Clay doesn’t mince his words. But even we were a bit surprised when his article ‘Ye Men of Ye Fens’, got picked up by the BBC.

Rontroversial (playing it safe undercover) with a Fenland zander
Someone tipped off Radio Cambridgeshire that our Ron (now known as Rontroversial Ron) reckoned the county’s drivers were the worst in Britain, in the article that sent up the locals.

“The reason for this is that most of them pass their tests at the age of 14 on a tractor,” he wrote.

“If there is a speed limit of 50 miles an hour on a narrow road next to a drain and you stick to it, the locals invariably tail-gate you sitting half an inch off your back bumper whilst hooting, giving a two-finger salute and shouting: ‘Get orf moi la-a-a-and.”

Ironically fellow FISHINGmagic contributor Chris Bishop, who writes a series for the site about the Fens, was called out of the blue and given a grilling live on air about Ron.

Then neighbouring Radio Norfolk picked up the story. And Chris got pressed into service as a guest on the early evening chat show, where Ron’s views sparked a 15-minute debate.

“He owes me a pint – assuming he survives long enough to get his hand in his pocket,” said Chris. “The site got a good plug, but if I was Ron I’d lie low for a few weeks before he comes down here piking.”
