S.A.F.E. was invited to the school by classes 7LR & 7WS to help them with their ‘Environmental Theme Week’. The invitation was given following liaison with other regulatory bodies and word of mouth.

SAFE gladly accepted the invitation and from Monday the 1st July to Wednesday the 3rd July arranged several activities that would help and support the aforementioned project.

Over the 3 days the Environment Agency and the Environmental Team of Stoke-on-Trent City Council assisted S.A.FE.

Don Corden from the Environment Agency started the 3-days with a presentation and slide show on varying activities relating to the work that they do. The response was outstanding from the pupils who thoroughly enjoyed the show and learnt quite a lot, some of which was implemented over the next few days. They gave Don 10/10 and have renamed him the ‘No.1 guy’.

On the second day it was our turn to follow in Don’s footsteps and give the pupils an informative and enjoyable day. Each class firstly received a brief talk on S.A.F.E. and Health & Safety. One class of 25 went fishing while the other class spent the morning on a number of talks/demonstrations on fishing in the school grounds. Where they had hands on experience of setting fishing tackle up, and how to use it. Incorporated in to this were a number of games. Casting a float in to a bucket, setting up a pole and using a pole cup feeder & pole rolling, plus fly fishing casting. Each pupil then had a go at each demonstration and enjoyed it so much we couldn’t drag them away for their dinner.

The afternoon saw the Classes change places. The fishing took place on Trent & Mersey Canal at Trentham donated free by Fenton & District A.S. I must say the girls did show the boys how it was done and almost everyone caught a fish including the teachers.

The final day saw Ivan from Stoke-on-Trent City Council Environmental Team do a pond dip. Various things were found and the pupils even requested help from Ivan in cleaning up the pond in the very near future.

Finally the pupils had their say on the activities of the three days. All enjoyed their time so much they asked if S.A.F.E could do this every week. The pupils quite vocally thanked everyone for attending the school to help with their project adding the Instructors were ‘brilliant’.

Throughout the 3-days the pupils were enthusiastic, keen and eager to learn all they could. So much so they have all requested calendars of SAFE events plus membership forms for the local angling clubs.

On asking the Head Teacher here thoughts she responded with a note, that once opened had the following: B+, SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
