Carp anglers have been way ahead of the curve on underwater video stakes compared with sea anglers, so I decided to set things straight by investing in a camera and getting to work.
To be fair, there’s a good reason why sea anglers have been slower in the uptake. Many of the venues we fish tend to be fraught with danger: deep water, fast flowing currents and underwater mountains – terrain that regularly steals heavy sea fishing equipment. Lobbing an expensive camera into the ocean was no mild decision, especially for a tight Scotsman like me…
And for my first underwater video I decided to go to perhaps the snaggiest shore angling venue in England – Samphire Hoe, near Dover. It’s an area of land created by the slag waste from when they drilled the hole for the Channel Tunnel. Out from the promenade lies a boulder field, with many of the rocks literally bigger than a car. I only realised how fraught this exercise was when reviewing the footage; the camera literally disappeared down underwater canyons. The potential benefits of learning more about fish feeding habits and their habitat from underwater, I thought, could be huge.
I devised a method of presenting a bait in front of the camera, and hopefully you’ll agree the results were good. I’ll be revealing how I did it, along with many more fishing videos in a new series for FishingMagic and on my YouTube channel HERE so watch this space!
