What do we want from a sock?
I want warmth in cold weather, coolness in warm weather, comfort and a long life. They are the basic requirements. There isn’t much more you can ask for is there?
Oh yes there is.
How about a sock that’s so waterproof you can paddle in it? How about that same sock being breathable so that your feet don’t get wet from sweat?
And if that sock is as comfortable as an ordinary woollen sock, and stretches to fit all shapes of feet, then it doesn’t exist, does it?
Oh yes it does.
And I should know. I’ve had a pair for a few months now that meet all those requirements.
I used them while carp fishing for a week in France not long ago. I could lie in my sleeping bag with my socks on and then run out in the dew-laden grass to deal with a bite and not know the grass was wet. No time was wasted slipping on boots or shoes, I didn’t have to lie on top of the sleeping bag in my boots and so I was instantly ready to respond to the bite alarm when it called me.
Other advantages are that you can wear a pair of comfy old boots that have seen better days as far as being waterproof is concerned, and pull the socks up your legs to give you both warmth and dryness. They’re machine washable too. And you can wear them with a SealSkinz liner sock for extra padding and warmth.
There is a slight stiffness with them, but you don’t notice that once they’ve been on for a few minutes, and I don’t yet know how hard-wearing they’ll be. But the evidence so far is that there won’t a problem with that. As far as I’m concerned they’re sock-on!
The socks I’ve got are the ‘mid-light’ ones and cost £ 19.99. If you want to know more go to the Sealskinz website, where you’ll find full details and a complete breakdown of the spec.
