This line was said to be quite revolutionary, in that it was supposed to be a kind of hybrid of mono and braid, although it is without doubt a mono. The hybridisation is found, say Shimano, in the properties of the line, combining the qualities of both braid and mono.
The company say this Technium Tournament Carp Line has a three-core structure, but technically speaking they mean an outer casing with two cores. That the line offers low stretch, low memory and high abrasion resistance. That it has a stretch factor of 12% (compared with braid at 5% and standard mono at 25%) excellent abrasion resistance (braid has poor abrasion resistance) and an exceptionally low memory that ensures the line does not spring too readily off the spool. A smooth outer coating increases casting distance. The colour is gun metal grey, and the diameter/strength ratio is good at 0.26m/10lbs.
I’ve now used this line for a full season, targeting carp and barbel. There is no doubt that the line feels good. It is lovely and smooth, and I like that in a line because I’m certain the fish like that too. That’s one of the main problems with braids, in that they have a rough feel that I’m sure spooks many educated fish who feel it on their lips just as they are about to take the bait. Not that I’ve used this line as a hooklength but it is worth making a point about the smoothness for those who intend to use it right up to the hook. The smoothness is a definite plus factor for the big chuckers though, as it will give them a few extra yards. I’m not too sure about the colour. It’s not a bad colour, the gun metal grey, and I suppose it depends on what type of bottom you’re using it. But I must say my personal favourite is no colour at all, just a nice clear line.
My verdict, now that I’ve used it a great many times, is that yes, it is a good line. It doesn’t have too much stretch, and it is smooth, and it doesn’t kink and curl too much. But would I pay nearly 30 quid for a 1500yd spool? Would I hell! It’s good, but not that good. I recommend it for those anglers who have to have the best (and it is up there amongst the best) where money is no object. But it has to be said that there are lines costing a third of that price that are just as good.
