Board Appoint New Director

The Spey Fishery Board is delighted to announce the appointment ofa new director – Dr James Butler. James studied AgriculturalEconomics at undergraduate level and went on to complete a PhD inwildlife and fisheriesmanagement in Zimbabwe.

In 1996 he was appointed Biologist to the fledgling Wester RossFisheries Trust,where his work included monitoring wild salmon andtrout stocks, and developing management strategies to protect andenhance their fragile stocks. This required close liaison withproprietors, angling clubs, salmon farmers, as well as localgovernment and public bodies. He also represented the Association ofWest Coast Fisheries Trusts on the Tripartite Working Group, which,along with the Scottish Executive and Scottish Quality Salmon, ispromoting the collaborative management of wild and farmed salmonidson the West Coast.

James, who is a keen salmon angler, will commence his appointmentfrom 1st December 2001 and is looking forwardrddto the challenge ofmanaging the Spey salmon stocks.

Catch and Release Update 2001

By the end of May, 155 spring salmon had been tagged. Of these 7were re-captured and released. One additional fish was caught andretained. The recapture rate is 5% so far. This is much lower thanthe 16% recorded in season 2000 but there are still several months ofthe season left.

The Board is immensely grateful to all Proprietors, ghillies,anglers and the following companies and individuals for theircontributions to the project, The Edinburgh Smoked Salmon Company,United Distillers and Vintners, Speyburn Distillery, John Webb (AST),Ian Maclaren (FRS, Pitlochry) and Charlie Suttie, who tied anexcellent set of salmon flies for the reward scheme.
