England Ladies pulled off a fantastic double when they won the CIPS World Championships in Slovenia at the weekend with Sandra Scotthorne of Doncaster landing an individual gold and the team also lifting gold.

And clothing company boss Sandra (42) has the added bonus that her husband Allan has also been crowned world champion himself making it a unique sporting achievement.

Day 1 saw last year’s champions France having the ignominy of finishing second last and effectively failing at the first hurdle as England won in style to give themselves an eight point cushion over arch rivals Italy. Sandra Scotthorne, Wendy Locker (33) of Chester and Wendy Lythgoe (23) of Warrington all won their zones and with Helen Dagnell (24) of Warrington and Yorkshire debutant Emma Pickering at just 16 doing well, an unchanged side was fielded for Day 2.

Sunday saw that faith repaid with Emma Pickering winning her section along with Scotthorne to seal a memorable victory.

Teams: 1 England; 2 Italy, 3 Germany, 4 Hungary.
