The 67 acre day ticket Sywell Reservoir has long been a premier and popular tench fishery which has produced fish well into double figures in the past, with a good average size of fish, but in recent years concerns over management and stocks have resulted in concerns over the longer term future of the venue.
Fisheries Team member Hugh Bunker said:
“Sywell is one of the top tench fisheries, however, local anglers – including the Tenchfishers group – have reported that the fishery would benefit from a helping hand to ensure good stocks remain for the future. Northamptonshire County Council is currently working to improve habitats at Sywell and we are pleased to be able to help by providing these young fish which should breed and further increase stocks.”
The fish that are being released into the reservoir by the Environment Agency have been bred at the organisation’s Calverton Fish Farm, near Nottingham. In addition to releasing the tench this week, the Environment Agency is also planning to carry out a series of surveys and monitoring projects at Sywell Country Park Reservoir over the next two years.
