The Fenland Thirties, A History

If ever there was a land where fishermen’s tales become the stuff of legend, it’s the Fens.

Remote and mysterious, criss-crossed by a maze of rivers and drains, leams and lodes, it’s a land where pikers dream under endless skies.

And those who fish these reclaimed lands, which the adventurers fought to drive the seas from, dream of only one thing.

A Fenland 30, the prize which eludes all but the chosen few.

Now you can sample the mystery and the magic, thanks to Pike Anglers Club organiser Dennis “Digger” Moules.

Moules’s List, as the project became known in piking circles, now records the captures of 51 pike over the magical weight.

Retired copper Dennis used his detective skills to track down the captors and their stories, putting a piece of history on record.

It might not win any prizes as far as print quality is concerned. But in a way that brings home that this is history in the raw – warts ‘n’ all, as Dennis calls it.

It’s bang up to date as well, most recent entries include two river thirties banked at the end of last season.
