We arrived on the Isle of Wight for a fishing/family holiday on the Saturday afternoon and unpacked the gear into the caravans we had rented for the week.

Then I took a walk round the lake to see what was happening.

Opening shot – 21lb 4oz to Cakey

After spotting some fizzing around a bush in a corner about 30 yards out I decided to give it a go. The others were too tired to go out.

I tied up one of my favorite rigs and put on a squid and octopus boilie. I cast to the fizzing and set the rod on my pod. I then tackled up a second rod the same way, with the same bait and cast this one about six foot to the right of the first rod and back leaded both of them.

Cakey equals the venue best with this 34-pounder

I sat watching the lake, looking for somewhere to place the third rod and decided to put it in open water where I had seen some more fizzing and fish rolling.

Just as I started tying the third rig the second rod tore off, a real screamer and after a real hard fight I had a 21lb 4oz carp in the net. The fish was returned safely following a few shots with the camera.

Lewis’s 14-pounder

I fished till dark but was too knackered to stay out, so I went to bed and set the alarm for 4am.

I returned to the same swim and decided to do the same again. By 5am all rods were out and at 8am the same rod screamed off again. After another real hard fight I had a 34lb mirror on the bank, more photos were taken before it was returned to the water.

Ian’s silver common

A little while later Tim the lake owner turned up and said that the fish was called Rosie’s Mate and that I had equaled the lake record.

I didn’t do a lot more fishing the rest of the week apart from taking Lewis, a 14year old member of our party, onto the smaller lake and catching a couple of smaller carp.

And Ian with his 27lb-plus mirror

Lewis had five altogether, biggest 14lb, so he was well chuffed. My son Ian had a 21lb-plus silver common and a 27lb-plus mirror along with a couple of others. Pat did his usual trick and blanked on both lakes.

I would like to thank all at Rookley Country Park for making our stay a pleasant one and to Tim for all his help.
