The Terry Hearn Stiff Rig

The ‘Terry Hearn’ Stiff Rig has been around for quite a few years now (even longer than he’s been using it!) and has proved itself as a really efficient pop-up rig. You only have to look at the angle the hook sits at to see why….. and with a bit of thought you can tweak it to be even better!

First off, we need to create a loop with the smaller swivel inside it.

I first tie a Granny Knot in the Amnesia, but before pulling tight, I put the swivel on the tag end, and pass the line through the Granny Knot (easier to see what I’m talking about in the picture!).

I use the ‘non-slip knot’ as shown in Dave Chilton’s excellent article. Then simply tie on the ring swivel on the end, and you’ve got the boom section sorted.

Next we need to sort the hook section out – take the hook (in this case an ESP Stiff-Rigger) and make a six turn Knotless Knot. Place the oval ring on the tag end, pass the tag back through the eye and blob with a lighter. I push the molten nylon onto my nail or something flat, it seems to give a neater finish. Now simply tie the finished hook section to the swivel and you’ve got a top pop-up rig.

About the Rigs Page

The Rigs Page is a library of features to illustrate all those rigs that will be useful to both beginners and experienced anglers.

The rigs can be extremely simple and well known, or very complicated and little known, it doesn’t matter providing they make some kind of sense and have a really practical application.

It could be a standard running leger rig that a beginner will appreciate seeing in pictures, or a very complicated anti-eject carp rig that the experienced carp angler would like to see.

If you wish to contribute a rig to this section please remember that the emphasis is on illustration rather than words. Good line drawings are fine in the absence of photographs. Please send to graham@fishingmagic.com
