Having fished the waters at Fishers Green for more years than I care to remember I thought you may be interested in a few of my thoughts and observations on the carp in the lakes.
Both the 70-acre and Hooks Marsh hold some huge rarely seen and even more rarely caught carp. Over the last twenty years there have been a number of groups of carp anglers who have tried to unlock the secrets of this water.
In the Eighties I managed to land a mirror carp of twenty-six pounds from Hooks Marsh, I no longer fish for carp seriously but do still fish the waters for tench and eels.
Gary Newland, who I fish with, holds the eel record for the water and has spent many hundreds of hours on the 70 acres, this year he saw a group of fish cruising on the surface, he would not put a figure on the fish but estimated their weights at around the 30lbs mark.
Last year whilst fishing for tench a huge mirror carp rolled over in my swim under my rod tip it did the same thing in Gary’s swim a few yards down the bank. We put the weight of the fish at 40lb.
Location is the biggest problem on these lakes, about a third of the 70 acre is out of bounds on the RMC ticket, some years the weed growth is terrible and all species are very much preoccupied on natural food sources.
Anyone tackling these waters would be advised to take a mobile approach, look for fish movements, fish at least one/two rods with natural baits and add their chosen bait in known carp-holding areas (if you can find them).
Lastly most of the lads fishing for other species hook something unstoppable every year, but if you are young, fit and have the time there are monsters to be caught.
