Frank’s Weekly Fishing Column

30th April 2001

This weeks specimen catch must go to the massive bream caught bymember, Tony Fielding from the large lake at Sandiway. Tony wasfishing boilies for carp when the fish weighing in at 15-2-0 took hisbait, he had already slid his net under fish of 8lbs and 9-8-0 andalso included tench over 7lbs in his catch. This fishery is alsoproducing smaller tench in good numbers. On the small lake tenchpredominate plus a few bream. The roach and rudd seem to have done avanishing act this past week.

Rixton Claypits is worth a visit if only for the scenicsurroundings, the bonus is that the fishing isn’t too dad either, tench to 4lbs reported, taking mainly maggot or corn.

Sport at Grey Mist Mere is having a quiet spell as the carp arestarting to spawn. Graham Edwards’ session totalled three mirrors, one at 14lbs and two at 15lbs.

I don’t know where the quality roach have been hiding at AstlePool, but anglers have been bagging on fish in the eight to ten ouncebracket. Maggot or pinkie best bait. Carp also feeding but only fishof single figures featuring in catches.

The Bridgewater Canal is patchy but small roach, gudgeon, andskimmers are still feeding. Good news is that more of the canal isnow open to anglers as the closures due to foot & mouthrestrictions are gradually being lifted as the situation improves.Currently you can now fish from Preston Brook Tunnel to Agden Bridgeand Seamons Moss Bridge to Broadheath. A favourable risk assessmenthas allowed us to now open Budworth Mere.

Please note that due to foot & mouth restrictions on the Trent& Mersey Canal the Centenary Challenge Match scheduled for Sundayhas been unavoidably cancelled.
