The smallest run of adult autumn chinook salmon since 1992, say the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which could mean restrictions on fishing in the 2001 season.
Okay, so that’s not going affect many UK anglers, but the Oregon DFW officials reckon that the severe floods of 1996, that ripped out bankside trees and displaced large amounts of gravel in the riverbed, were responsible.
The flood exposed the salmon eggs in the gravel leaving them defenceless.
Is this the kind of thing we’re going to come up against in a year or two, when the results of our recent floods become apparent?
