MAXIMUM RETURN FOR DES SHIPP HOME International cap Des Shipp won the 180-angler White Acres Crazy Bait Sensas Spring Festival with a faultless maximum 36 points score to earn the £ 2000 winning cheque and Sensas prizes. Des, a 31-year-old fork lift driver from Yate near Bristol, has now won this event three times in the past four years. Fished on the White Acres lakes, Bolingey, Gwinear and Porth they all showed great form in superb spring weather and a total of 24 100 lb-plus catches were made in the five days of competition. With four results out of five to count and nine points for a section win Preston Innovations and Sensas sponsored Des had recorded the required four section wins by Thursday evening with one match still to go. That left midland baggers Grant Albutt and Kieron Rich hoping for final day section wins to tie with Des and force the fifth result decider. However Des continued the form he had been in all week with another fine section win at Porth on the final day to leave Albutt and Rich battling for second and third. Neither Grant or Kieron managed a final day section win the latter finishing 7th in section and the former 3rd in section which left Albutt in second overall thanks to a better 5th score of 7 to Rich’s 3. Bag of the week went to fifth placed Simon Willsmore the Daiwa Dorking ace and Keenets Milo employee who rattled up a huge 140-4-0 of carp at Pollawyn’s peg 27 starting on feeder switching to waggler before really bagging on the pole. SHIPP’S COURSE Des started his winning trail with 127-9-0 at Bolingey’s peg 36 where working pole at 14 metres feeding caster and catching carp to 4 lb up in the water for a lake and section win worth £ 250. Then on peg 18 at Pollawyn 99-6-0 of carp to pole and waggler gave him a section win and overall lake third worth £ 150. A 51-4-0 bag of carp on poled meat at Python pool’s peg 17 notched up another section win and £ 25. Gwinear’s peg 27 saw Des record another ton-up bag with 127-11-0 of carp most of which came during the final 90 minutes after switching to worm to add another £ 250 to his winnings. The final Porth victory saw Des finish with 22-1-0 of roach and skimmers at peg 88 for a lake second to bring the Shipp winnings to a total of £ 3000 including bets, pools and main prize money. Grant Albutt was philosophical about his final day chances: ‘My peg was solid down the side in the last hour and I had 40 lb in the last half an hour – if the match carried on another 30 minutes I’d have won the lake,’ said Grant. However he paid tribute to the Shipp bagging machine; ‘You won’t ever beat Des at Porth and it was always on the cards that he’d score another maximum o n that final day. If I’ve lost this festival anywhere it was at Gwinear next to Kieron Rich – he changed to worm and bagged but I didn’t have any worms with me,’ he admitted!
