Hereford DAA’s famous match stretch in Hereford town centre is in the news every winter when large shoals of roach and dace move up into the town centre length for the duration giving tremendous weights but the well known match venue has a lot to offer the specialist angler too.
Recently Welsh match angler Danny Baker caused a major stir with his winter league match winning 35lb 2oz carp caught from the town stretch. The tremendous fish raised eyebrows amongst anglers everywhere except, of course, for the members of Hereford DAA, who have been taking specimen fish of all types from their club water around the scenic market town for years, often straight after matches have finished!
Hereford DAA stalwart Pete Goulding explained to FM:
“There are a number of known big carp all along the match length, a regular visitor after weigh-ins to the margins is a 39lb plus fish that was caught at that weight in July this year and there are a number of 30lb plus fish in the stretch, all known fish with recognisable markings.
Sometimes it surprises me there are not more specialist anglers joining the Association as the town stretch’s big fish list in the last two years in matches alone is very impressive with barbel to 12lb, Perch to 4lb, chub to 7lb and bream to 9lb all caught, pike to 29lb were also caught last winter.”
