Judge Mr Justice Laddie finally established the controversial VAT status of live maggots on Thursday.
Fluff Ltd, from Colchester, maintained that their £ 2 a pint vending machine maggots should not be subject to a 17.5% tax as they were in fact non-taxable animal feed.
However, the High Court in London refused to overturn the VAT ruling stating that if anything nutritional could be classed as animal feed then straw boaters, sometimes eaten by cows, would fall under the same category. He added:’These maggots are not supplied as animal feeding stuff for fish, that is to say for the purpose of feeding and growing fish. They are supplied to entice fish towards hooks.’
…I wonder if you could avoid tax on your house if you just claimed to be living in woodworm feed?…
