I agree with Deanos, it smacks a bit of Big Brother to me. Next thing you know we'll have CD's containing members personal information getting lost in the post. Worse still, there will be Government snoopers demanding to know when we were on line and what we were talking about.

Don't get me wrong, I quite like it too. It might encourage a few people to write stuff for the site.

That may sound contradictory to my other post, a bit of friendly banter and competition is never a bad thing. What I object to is if people start being lambasted for only contributing to the forum. We should respect peoples' choice of contribution to the site as long as it falls within the rules n' regulations and all that.

I did say if people 'start' being lambasted.

I just don't think that people who enjoy the forum but don't write articles should be made to feel that they don't contribute to the site because they do.

They help make the site the friendly and entertaining place that it is and contribute to forum basedquestions which is just as valuable in its own way.

Maybe lambasted is a potentialexageration, would castigate be more appropriate?

Lambast/castigate as much as you want --After 65 years of being 'a nutter' I'm certainly not going to start being serious now .....there are too many serious people in the world ...... .........

The first one Paul, it doesn't show up in your "current" profile.

I don't reallyfeel there is any harm in justcontributing tothe Forum.

But, I do think people belittle themselves when it come to article writing, there are plenty of people to get advice from on here. IMHO everybody has at least one article in their head just waiting to be let out.

In fact I think, sometime ago Jeff Woodhouse, or one of his other parts/forum/smilies/wink_smiley.gifdid an article on just that subject.

I don't recall ever reading that it was a condition that you had to write an article to join FM,and I think it's wrong to have a go at people who don't --

Fred, you seem to have this thing about 'bait Box' and on numerous occasions you've said, or expressed the opinion that Bait Box should go (or words to that effect)
No-one forces you to read any of the posts in Bait Box and if you dislike it so much, the answer is simple --Don't go in there .
Why should the people that DO like it, be made to feel guilty about it, or lose it , because you or someone else doesn't like it.

Ed, nobody has ever said to my knowledge that it's a condition, who's had a go?

I have got a thing about Bait Box, but I live with it, andIcontribute to it.

I still think it lowers the tone of this fishing website, and I know of people who won't visit because of some of the Bait Box content. In my opinion if you feel guilty about useing it, then you are.

Just ask the 45 odd thousand who don't come back.

I totally agree with Ed, if you want to make writing an article a condition of membership then you can say goodbye to FM.

Baitbox is an important part of this site and I would be surprised if it doesn't get more postings than any other section. As Ed says, nobody is obliged to read it and its' critics should remember the old saying 'one mans meat is another mans poison'

I believe that this 'holier than thou' attitude will only be exacerbated by the publication of more information about individual members. Sadly the collection of this type of information appears to be some sort of obsession and I believe it is completely unnecessary as well as divisive.

"Just ask the 45 odd thousand who don't come back."

I don't understand what you mean by that.......

You and everyone else who doesn't like Bait box have a choice whether or not you use it.....take Bait Box away and you have taken the choice away from the people who do like it ....

Ihardly ever gothe Barbel sectionbecause of all the bickering and in-fighting that goes on ,or has gone on in the past, I think THAT lowers the tone of the site and I know of people who won't visit because ofit--- but I wouldn't dream of saying it should be got rid of, nor do I think it should ........

I look in on every forum topic, if I feel I can contribute constructively then I will post on it. I fish for everything when the time is right, so I feel that gives me the right to do so.

Bait box is a laugh, a piss take, a wind up, what's wrong with that?

We all do it in our day to day lives, so what's wrong with doing it with your internet buddies?

Bait Box is part of what makes FM the best site going. I've made countless friends on FM and ripping the piss in Bait Box is brilliant. When I've met these friends on FM fish-ins it's like we already know each other.

Instead of a cold handshake "I'm so an so and you're so an so nice to meet you" it's "Hello your Fred aint you? Kin ell mate you wound horse teeth right up!" Laughter all round!

Bait Box is Bait Box, long may it continue!

.

.

How do I regard my membership of FM?

We talk fishing, I ask questions (which are usually always answered) and we have a laugh.

What more could anyone ask for?

Well Ed, how many of the members actually post, or come to that sign in every week?

As for the Barbel section, all that bickering as you call it, happened just after it was set up 8 years ago!!!!!!

I thought it was good entertainment, it certainly got the hits.

Long memory for trivia has our Ed!/forum/smilies/big_smile_smiley.gif

So your saying that 45,000 oddmembers don't come back because of Bait Box ???

That's a load of rubbish and well you know it !

And it's a pity you haven't got a memory Fred --- The barbel section only started in January 2006 ........

So all the bickeringI referred to only happened within the last 2 years not 8......

I didn't say that Ed.

What I could have said, although I didn't, was that 45odd thousand people havejoined, and seen the postings on Bait Box and decided that perhaps they should log in elsewhere for their fishing information.

I'll keep baiting the hook if you carry on biting./forum/smilies/angel_smiley.gif
