I have quite a bad back, I'll not do the 'comparison' thing as its a competition I don't want to win!
Anyway I use a stray bar but put it high to take the weight of the pole, have my pole accoss my leg with my back straight. I tend to avoid waters where 14m plus is needed due to my back.
It works for me, but do have to listen to my body. I don't think I've helped too much because it sounds like you've already tried what I've suggested unsuccessfully??
