Try Aixe-sur-Vienne, opposite the camping ground off Rue Marcel Bourset. Go under the narrow railway bridge and leave your vehicle in the car park. Then walk about 150 metres downstream. Standard feeder tactics using sweetcorn or 6mm pellets should get you some nice chub and barbel to around 6lb plus a chance of a double figure carp. Alternatively there is a parcours de peche off the D32 signed St. Yriex Sous Vienne. Find a seam and fish feeder. There are more carp in that stretch so fish with a bit heavier line.

Upstream of Limoges is Le Palais sur Vienne which is a mixed fishery.

Don't forget that you need a Carte de Peche.

This reminded me of a session I had there at the end of May last year. The barbel went just over 6lb, but I could only guess at whatever it was that steamed off and broke the 8lb hook link.

I suggested this place to a French angler who was holidaying near to Limoges. He fished it in April last year. His non catch report is as follows:

Can you tell me what kind of monsters live in the Vienne in the Aixe sur Vienne area, because I went there today in tourist mode and I was taken apart a good ten times on 0.22 Browning Hybrid Power Mono, hooks under 12 were staightened, I managed to hold a few nice fish with Drennan Super Specialist in 10 and 8, but they ended up getting the better of the 0.22 hook link.
You can't help some folk :ROFLMAO:

We were passing through Chatellerault on the Vienne Thursday. The river looked wonderful and I spotted a barbel within seconds of looking over the bridge parapet. Another and yet another slipped out from the weed, then I spotted a deep section in a perfect run behind the weed, my instincts said "big fish". Right on cue a massive swirl and tail slap - was it a carp?

There were signs on the bridges saying no fishing, but I guess that was just from the bridges. This guy was chucking lures wading out from an access point......

I have never fished the Vienne, I would take Clive's advice! 🎣

That is outside my area Steve. I have fished about 30km upstream, piggy backing onto my working travels. But it is too far to travel for a day trip. I try to stay within an hour from home.

Hi Clive, we were there for a one night stop-over on our return from the Dublin-Cherbourg overnight ferry. Back home now, great trip but knackered!

Glad that you were able to make the trip Steve. It sounded like touch and go.

Apparently we will be doing St Cirq and Cajarc after the schools reopen, so my social secretary tells me. Still not sure where I'm going to head for on my solo fishing holiday next month. Marais-Poitevin for mullet and carassins or the Charente Cognac area I mentioned to you previously.

I have looked up that area on google earth. It is the same pound as the Parcours de Peche and being closer to the weir ought to hold barbel if the depth is sufficient. I rarely fish anywhere less than 100cm deep, ideally more than 150cm. The problem with much of the Vienne is that it is shallow in many places. The deeper runs tend to hold the better fish.

Hope you have better luck next time.
