Tried dry fly on fine floating tackle ie 2,5lb BS line greased with a small float to give some casting weight.Absolutely nothing caught but did get a couple of looks from what was a shoal of roach on a small pit...

This was a cobbled together set-up hastily put together for some roach that suddenly appeared........just happened to have a couple of largish bushy flies used for chub on rivers where they work quite well(River Loddon)

Rubber Bluebottles....very droll!!

I used the rubber sweetcorn quite well with real sweetcorn for carp. Is there any advantage in using a fake maggot/caster when float fishing with whats a fairly light hook? Surely with such a light weight hook critical balancing is void? Especially with a sinking version?

438 chub over five pound in last eleven seasons exactly 100 caught to plastic caster from enterprise 31 were over 6lb and one was 7lb 3oz ....so nearly a quarter of my chub have fallen to plastic ...i have had two barbel 11lb 11oz and 12lb 2oz to plastic caster which were admittedly caught whilst chub fishing ..the drennan maggots also catch chub i used them at the end of last season and had a 6lb 9oz chub on them ..they are flavoured with pineapple ...plastic yeah its fantastic

As an angler who has spent a lifetime fishing artificial flies and other lures for a large variety of species, not just trout, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the use of synthetic baits.

Match anglers object of course because using sythetic baits cuts out the time it takes to re-bait the hook. But I seem to remember years ago that matchmen used a bit of white leather to catch lots of bleak.

But perhaps the advances being made with the use of artificial baits might hit at the bait industry.

It might be like the company that suddenly appears that has a car for sale that doesn't need oil based fuel.

All the Luddites would be most upset, wouldn't they?

cam clearie................is that fishing with just artificials or with live ones on the hook as well??
I've never used them so I'm interested to know how you fished them...

You say you use Drennan-any other makes you recommend??

Thats a pretty impressive chub count though-by any standard!!

Of the 438 chub reported only 3 different fish were involved, 1 of 7lb 3oz, 1 just over 6lb and the other was around the 5lb mark.

:wh:wh:wh:p:p;);):D:D

.... a seriously good tally Cam. :)

false baits

I use the ones from enterprise tackle.
Re trotting, I personally think they are actually better than the reel thing because they do negate the weight of the hook and therefor behave as naturally as possible (they are still attatched to line) but at least you can get them to fall through the water at the same speed as the rest. When i use them on the river I use no lives on the hook but, on stillwaters I add an equal number of each.

i too use all enterprise false baits and cant fault them ie----corn hemp magg bread caster---they all catch

grumpy old git i admit there were recaptures however i have got pictures of all 105 chub over six pounds and all 7 sevens there are no recaptured sevens and of the sixs maybe 15 have been caught twice with one fish i have caught six times ......they all have little differences .as far as using maggots and artificials together well we started doing that initially but soon realised we didnt need to .enterprise casters in red are probably my favorite and like i said the drennan artificial maggots are also very good plus i have some new casters which i believe are called mimicks which look more like casters than casters. In my neck of the woods chub are big and have been very numerous in the last ten years there are people who just fish for chub and their catch records are far better than mine .my very good friend Dave Roach has caught a ridiculous amout of chub i remember him catching over 40 six pound chub one winter .and i can assure you an awful lot of them came to enterprise casters hair rigged to a half inch hooklenth below an inline black cap feeder .down here we call it the hanger rig.

yes mate i promise you we use half inch hooklenths to catch chub and yes it is inline .the black cap feeders dont come made inline .just remove the swivel and powergum and make a hole in the bottom of the feeder ,The hoolink is made as follows ....an enterprise caster is pierced with a sewing needle length ways 4lb fireline braid is past threw the caster then looped round and tied with a uni knot.the now captive caster is now knotless knotted to a size fourteen drennan barbel hook the now hair rigged castr now has to be tied to a swivel and the only knot you can now use to achieve a half inch complete rig is a palomar .i prefer uni knots to palomars but it is just not possible to use a uni knot and get it short enough .a two inch rig is just not short enough .4lb fireline braid actually breaks at 9lb dead weight .has the same diametre as 1lb mono and is awesome stuff.
look heres a pic of my chub rig wallet you can see the artificial casters and you will notice a second section on the trace .this is powergum and i had been using this as a shock absrber to the rig .it ment tying the powergum to a micro swivel so it could pass through the feeder should a snap occur to the mainline .i have now rendered this attachment redundant by buying a softer rod .

This is great stuff Cam...like a breath of fresh air!

I don't know about anyone else but I'm learning a lot with this and as for the 'chub rig wallet'...well,I'm impressed!!

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

(I might comment later-once I've absorbed your posts......)

whilst the way i tie them is my way alone there are many ways to achieve the same thing .the supershort rig is certainly not my idea .many will lay claim to it but if i was to name one person who i would say started it it would be John cadd who was using an elastic band on his feeder back in the sixtys .so not exactly new and i really am not giving away any secrets here .pmsl ....

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Excellent stuff...but those old enough [like me] to remember when block ends first became widely available ultra short hooklinks were not uncommon.Maybe not that short but I certainly remember fishing 2 inch hooklinks for barbel on the Royalty when they'd pick the feeder up and shake it to get the maggots out.

Now come on Cam, you know the only way to catch chub "properly" is on the 'pin trotting a float! :p

I've had..... ooh .... at least one "7" and a "few" "6's" that way. No, hang on, that "7" was on the Black Cap using a hooklink tied by.... Nick Roberts!

nothing wrong with trotting Neil if thats what you like .We do believe however that if you can get them going crazy for the feeder then you will have the chance to do what simon ebborn did one afternoon well afternoon is streching it a bit it was actually two and a half hours ..he had three sevens four sixs four fives and a couple of smaller fish that would of been fours but were not weighed .on a really bright day i would say trotting will outclass the feeder but come the end of the day the feeder will come into its own .so you caught a seven on one of nicks rigs .....he has never had a seven ...he will then they will be like the provebial bus ......one thing we believe the black caps are thought of as mother creatures and to pick one up and shake it will get her to shed her young ......other feeders do not seem to get them going crazy .finally leave a couple of feeders in a tub of red maggots the dye used in the maggots will stain the plastic red i am convinced it helps.
