Huge punches seem to work with carp. I heard of a bloke being really successful using one of those old 35mm plastic film containers as a punch.

Ralph.

I use a screw top from a bottle of Gordon's gin......hic.....:)

Iyou catch better when the bread is as soggy as can be which happens more quickly than with a compressed pellet.

Have you punched 'wet bread' Mark, as in the night before soaked and compressed preparation?

I use wet bread quite a lot in the winter and have found exactly what you've put regarding soggy being far better than a compressed or even relatively soft, initially dry and freshly punched pellet.

I have only used wet bread in larger pieces which I have torn off by hand but have often considered punching it in smaller sizes.

Problem with wet bread is if your trying to cast a bit, it just comes off on the cast. Obviously it's ok if your just swinging out shortish distances.

I use bread punches nearly every trip. My bread punches are made either from old radio aerials (which are chromed brass tubes of slightly different diameters) or two inch long sections of old carbon rods.

I punch the slice of bread one to four times and then gently push the bits of bread out using a piece of plastic rod. I put a small piece of old rag into one of those small clippy food boxes which is covered in flavouring, I pinch the flavoured rag and transfer the flavour on to the punched bread when I hook the pieces of punched bread. Sounds complicated but it's quick and easy!

Depending on how I am fishing hooks range from size 18 to size 8 for roach. For legering at night I usually put 8 bits of punched bread (that's two lots of four bits of bread on a size 10 hook.

Try it out at home by testing in a bucket of water. The bread swells up nicely, and also stays on well enough.

You're welcome Rayner; credit where credit is due!:)

I have tried wet bread and went to great lengths to produce the finest kosher wet bread imaginable!;) sadly I caught nothing and found it came off the hook on the cast!:( I ate the rest of the Challah myself and it was delicious and wasted on fish!
