Once again, the valuation day at Dever Springs went down a treat. Leaving Staffordshire in the frozen north where even the eskimos in the garden were cold!

On arrival at Dever Springs, Peter Cockwill was on hand as usual chatting fishery talk and taking bookings. For some people it was their first visit to Dever, bringing tackle to have valued or to sell. It proves an ideal opportunity to make a booking to fish this iconic big fish venue. We met regular and new clients with a variety of items. The star of the show is this Hardy Perfect 1893/4 all brass salmon fly reel in 4-1/4” diameter.

We have known of this reel for approx. 2 years, but with the world in a Covid twist it has taken this long to get to a deal. The nickle pillars and shaded Rod in hand trademark make this an unusual and rare reel for any collector.

Next, a Sharpes Royal Tribute impregnated split cane staggered ferrule trout fly rod appeared. A limited edition of only 100 rods by Farlow, hand built in the old Sharpes factory in Aberdeen in 1981, this is No 17 with certificate, bag and alloy tube. They were built to commemorate the wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles) and Lady Diana Spencer. A rare and collectable rod with future proof value.

A Hard Fibalite spinning rod with original and shrink wrap to the handle was a good find plus many rods and reels by Hardy, Orvis, Sage, Thomas and Thomas and others arrived in a steady stream of cars and vans.

A chance meeting with David Spaul proved very interesting. A big game fish taxidermist of 20 years he has recently turned his hand to wood carving. He popped into the lodge with this stunning carved trout over rocks on a wooden base.

Approx. 80 hours of carving and painting produced this astonishing piece of art. When asked what his first piece of big game taxidermy? he replied, “Wild boar piglet”, you don’t hear that every day. David will take on a commission and can be contacted on 07730 759481.

With the day ending, Peter invited me to his home where we recorded a video about the late Gary Brooker’s fly tying cabinet.

This will be offered for sale very shortly. A one-off opportunity to claim a piece of rock and roll fishing history with 100% of the proceeds going to a charity of Mrs Brooker’s choice. Thanks Peter, for all your help.

You can watch the video here.

If you run a fishery or a tackle shop, get in touch with us to discuss Valuation Days. They are free, they attract many new people giving them a reason to visit your venue. Often, they will spend the money from the sale of their tackle on fishing or on more tackle from your shop, its win, win all round.

We have a strong social media presence and it works.

Our next valuation day will be Avenue Angling in Beccles on March 24th then a return visit to Sportfish, Theale, Reading on April 29th. Get in touch if you have any antique, classic or high-quality modern fishing tackle to sell or have valued.

We look forward to seeing you at any of our valuation days.
