i tend to use 8lb on a strong river just because if there is snags i'll do my best to free my self and worst case i lose a hook rather than a whole rig

Iain.

Thanks for answering the original question mate.

Seems to me we all fish different rivers, and all have a way/style were happy with.

I'll stick with what I've been using for the last half a century, a reasonable strength main line, and a hook link to suit the situation.

I Fish the Trent and i step up to 4.4 Bayer for Barbel. Decent 15 foot float rod makes the biggest difference for me. I think heavier line breaks just as easy on rocks as it,s obviously under far more tension if you want to fast track a angry Barbel.
Put enough pressure on 30lb line and then touch it on a brick !

In my opinion 7.9lb Silstar matchteam is a great line for trotting for barbel,i've had a few doubles on it,it is very robust and when used on a decent match, specimen float rod handles the job perfectly,I know a couple of mates who have had a few 17lbs plussers on it,but as we all know it's all personal prefence.:)
