"Steve's contribution to the team has been in all those years: dedication, team spirit, ability, professionalism and, above all, his willingness to put team success before individual glory. In other words he has been the ultimate team professional."

An England Team without Stevie Gardner is almost impossible to contemplate.

Everybody has a shelf life, don't they? Difficult to imagine England without Kevin Ashurst, Bob Nudd et al.

But time moves on - and catches up with us all.

In what other sport would anyone get a 27 year run? I should think Mr G will be considered again if the rest does him good and he makes himself an indispensable choice again.

Plenty of other sportsmen have done it. If he wants it badly enough, he can give it his best shot - and I've no doubt he will.

When I saw the headline I immediately thought that he'd beaten Geoff Boycott's longest inning record by about a month.

I was thinking about Mr Boycott the other day. Good thing he retired before the 20:20 era. How much of an overdose of Speed would he need to play that game?

Did he ever hit a six in first class cricket? I'm struggling to remember.....:)
