I came across this on a French fishing site. They don't talk about weights over here, just length. I think this is a topping idea not just for perch, but other species. A lot less intrusive than weighing them.

I have seen XXL ones pegged on the ground when catfish are the quarry.

That's a good idea, beats the old fag packet/ forceps for an idea of scale.

Quite reasonably priced too. I think I will invest in one for my piking this year.

As for the way other countries indicate fish sizes it seems that only in the UK are they shown as between two hands, most other places in my experience extend the right arm palm upwards and place the left hand at the corresponding distance from the fingertips or if the fish are less than hand size between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand.

Lovely looking perch.

Measuring is a big thing already in UK lure fishing . It is odd to hear someone saying they've caught a thirty when all they've done is to catch a nice perch 30cm long . Cumulative weight is also a thing so the answer to 'doing much good ?' can be' yeah, 2 .1 metres ', instead of 'yes , shed loads of little perch '. Matters are confused even more by the adoption of some US terminology - so you might hear fry chasing perch being described as 'busting out ' .

I have no idea how long , or fat , any big perch are which I've caught, but I do know what they weigh - and it isn't in kilos either.

I saw a video on drop shotting where the guy claimed that x number of 3" perch were equal to a 20lb pike. Don't get that myself, but each to their own. To be fair, saying that they have caught a cumulative length of fish is no different to claiming to have caught a cumulative weight of fish.

What benefit I see in the measuring sheet is that you get an accurate representation of the size of the fish without having to weigh it. And it could serve as a double check for those dodgy claimed weights. The ones where the angler's fingers wouldn't go up his nose.

I didn't catch that perch by the way. It was caught by a French predator specialist who has a great deal of sucess with lure fishing.

Thats still true for alot of predator anglers but I see more and more anglers nowadays talking about weight. I think French anglers are coming round to the idea that using length as a scale for size is not the most accurate way to go about it. At least in my neck of the woods.

Each to their own I guess but for me I"ll be sticking to scales.
