I really can't see a problem with a chat taking another direction than the one the thread is on. generally, the chat returns on track bar for a little sidestep.
One track threads soon bore me. I see changes in tack more entertaining than a simple mono select line of question and answer. A more simple line may strictly be what you'd be expecting to a question asked, I'd sooner see a little humour thrown in so long as the thread gets on track again who cares.
