A drive through the wintery lanes of Herefordshire reminded me how stunning the River Wye can be at this time of year. Stripped back foliage allows the natural contours of the river to glisten in the midday sun, even at -6 degrees. Narrow country tracks were a challenge and without road salt, there were a few tense moments to and from the location.

Our client had only just settled into his 18th century cottage some 14 days previously. With panoramic views front and back, it will have been an estate agent’s dream listing. The collection I was shown was small but contained some fine items. Quality far surpasses volume in the vintage tackle scene, and this was right on target.

The Hardy Perfect 2-7/8” is a very popular reel for both collectors and anglers. This model with the factory fitted smoke agate line guide in Hardy nickel frame is a good example. The famous Duplicated Mk2 check, best in its class affords a smooth clicker with single or twin spring and pawl options. A rim mounted brake adjuster allows fine incremental tension adjustments to suit your line and style. Ideally suited to #3/4 lines these little reels feel as good on classic cane, hollow glass or the carbon fibre rods of today. Hardy named this reel The Perfect for a very good reason and not by chance. The internal ball race ensures the reel runs smooth and has a long user life.

The Farlow of London “small Meakin” cabinet designed by Major G.A.Meakin is one the best example I’ve seen in years. These black japanned tins come have a drop down front and carry handle. Two sizes for the collector to chase, five or three slide out trays with hinged lids and celluloid windows. Generally, these cabinets or reservoirs were kept at home. The selected flies taken to the bank in smaller pocket boxes like the two Hardy Neroda wet and dry fly boxes shown here.

The creel c1930 is a good example with an internal removable top sandwich tray and side fish slot with a leather flap cover. The metal hasp has a twist n turn lock and overall, the creel remains in good fishable condition. Assorted wallets and of course the iconic Hardy traditional canvas and leather tackle bag and Hardy net finishes off any collection or outfit to take to the bank in style.

The owner of this collection was delighted in the knowledge that their family heirlooms will live on with others who will cherish and fish them all over again.
