I also bought mine from Haith's.....
It doesn't split like standard hemp as such - well, hardly any does, and generally speaking the ones that do split aren't much use as they just split even more with the insertion of the hook bend. Once cooked, and by this I mean when you can see a 'few' with the white kernel showing, most will open by squeezing the 'ends' between the fingers UNTIL THE SPLIT JUST STARTS TO OPEN, and they will grip the hook quite well.
Sometimes it takes a bit of pressure to open them so it's case of trial and error, BUT they do work and the ones that grip the hook bend tightly are definitely the best, imho.
I know exactly what you mean, wetthrough, and it was the same story for me to begin with, but I persevered (even finding the perfect cooking time is a lot of trial and error) and in the end I got it right.
I hope you have another go as the time spent will be well worth it....
Good luck
Tony
ps The giant hemp doesn't produce oily liquid (such as that found it tinned hemp) so I give the giant stuff a good splash of the tinned hemp liquid to make to make it smell more attractive - that's my reasoning, anyway!!
pps In using the giant hemp I sometimes chop and change it with tares and I've found this can take the odd good fish if the former stops taking fish. Don't want to tell you how to fish, but if you have a deepish swim, search it from top to bottom with an 'on the drop set-up, feeding standard hemp in very small quantities., casting EVERY couple of minutes.....................................
