May I suggest also an unhooking mat might be a good investment. Fisheries usually insist on one.

With a bust foot and the prospect of two weeks in Wales with no river fishing it was back to the Salwarpe on Sunday, safe in the knowledge that if all else fails I can get to a couple of pegs on hands and knees if necessary;) Decided that I would have a knock with a quiver tip and maggot feeder (JW Avon travel) but took the 11'6 float "just in case". First cast, tip starts twitching and a chublet is swung in, piece of cake this feeder fishing:D Inside thirty biteless minutes the float rod is being set up with a 3BB topper and 20 to 2lb, patience is not one of my greater virtues. First trot a dace probably slightly bigger than the chub, again on a couple of red maggots. Another quiet thirty minutes so I changed to worm with some better results, six perch to a pound and a half (pb for this river) another five chublets to around the half pound mark and another dace. Bites stopped around 1.30pm so decided to hobble to another peg, the overhanging trees and varying flow make float fishing the far bank tricky and getting tired of having to hold the rod up and then reel in prior to striking was leading me back to the leger, I'd managed another chublet and dace but missed about half a dozen bites. Changed the set up from feeder to a couple of SSG shot and fished worm over maggot for three more perch including another netter around the three quarter mark. nearly missed the first one by watching the tip, never considered it doesn't move if the fish takes the bait and moves towards you it was only the slack line that tipped me off:eek:mg: Maybe someone can explain what happens if you're carping with alarms and the fish takes the bait in this manner:confused:

I doubt you would be relying on alarms with this method. For the alarms to work ,the bobbin needs to tension the line enough to operate the roller mechanism. The tension needs to be at the terminal tackle as well otherwise the bobbin would drag the line. A weight is needed at the terminal tackle end to show what is a drop back.
Well I know what I am getting at anyway.

Out on the reservoir again today with eleven white egrets strutting about the margins. The level is dropping slowly exposing loads of mud to slide about in.
Cast out the two method feeder rods hoping to trip up a tench or two - sixteen bream instead ranging from around 6oz to 5lb,only seven being proper bream, the rest being small skimmers and most of them falling to plastic corn.Wind kept swinging about from S to W and back again but much better conditions than the forecast - northerlies and biblical amounts of rain for the next two days - wonderful summer weather again.

Having been away on holiday and having a ton of domestic duties I deferred for an age, a fishing trip didn't look a likely exercise until a rare moment of genius from the current future ex Mrs.

Whilst perusing the tinternet, I heard her call out "Hey, look at this." Now this normally means the discovery of our next holiday destination, her next pair of shoes or something similar.

This time, she'd found a lake on Google Earth. It was, she reported, at the top of the road, on the main road through the village we live in. I've driven past this spot and there's no lake - there is, it transpires, but it can't be seen from the road.

With a combination of local knowledge, photographic landmarks and common sense we worked out which house it belonged to. It looked fabulous and I wished I could have something like that in my back garden. I estimated, very roughly, the lake to be circa three quarters of an acre.

A few days later whilst driving, I noted that relevant house owner was in his front garden and something in me told me to do it. I turned off, parked up, walked back and instigated a conversation, admitting my other half had found the lake and that I'd absolutely love to have a dabble. I produced my rod licence and what I thought was a convincing argument but the old boy was wavering. I produced my driving licence to show a local address, he looked a little happier. In desperation, I asked if he liked wine. Fotunately, he did - very much. Even more fortunately, as I don't touch the stuff and people keep giving me the stuff, a bottle from a small private French estate which never enters the UK retail market was enough to swing the deal.

He'd lived in this house since 1979 and he knew there were some fish in there but only thought they might be some kind of carp, not being an angler.

To end this long missive (for which I apologise but hope the unusual nature might buy me some forgiveness), I packed, first, my waterproofs, the debut for my Darent Valley Specialist rod, Preston PXR 4000 reel, 5lb main down to a 4AAA Drake bodied waggler (heavier tha I usually fish but the plan being to allow me to cast to and explore virtually the entire lake) down to a 14 on 4.6lb trace. Baits were banana flavoured corn, 8mm cubed meat and loose fed hemp.

I didn't know if truly wild fish would recognise them, or even how many fish were in there but a great opportunity not to be missed, made even better by an elevenses mug of Earl Grey and a French Fancy (pink) from the lady of the house.

The final tally was 11 small carp, from 8oz up to around 3lbs and four tench, two circa 12oz, one around 1lb and one a tad bigger.

The baits were roughly half and half, with one more to corn.

A grand day out at an almost unique venue. Hope the length didn't put you to sleep, dear reader. Have a great week, all. :)

Old codgers match today for the over 55's in the club...
GUC at Wilstone near Tring. Very wet to start with at 8:30 in this rod and float only fixture..
I set up a light balsa canal waggler 4xno4 John Wilson original to a 20b511 to 0:06..on my 13' ultra lite match rod.

A few small Rudd at the off on slow sinking maggot before they disappeared, plenty of see through tiny gudgeon and mini roach. Later a couple of perch and a few skimmers but nothing over 6oz....

Weighed in at 1:30pm

Winner had 4lb: 6.
2nd 3:12
3rd. 3:2. Moi:)

2 carp were lost by one angler aged 85 and the oldest angler was 88.

Shame about the rain but none of the 10 old gits went home early and nobody blanked....

I fish most days due to a kind wife and being medically retired. Fishing is my therapy so there's another reason. Sunday morning on the river Rother Sussex Caught 5 small Chub on hot and spicy luncheon meat. Lots of line knocks. Monday on the Arun using the same bait 2 small Eels. Tuesday back to another part of the River Rother Sussex i had 1x 3lb Chub, a hand sized Barbel. Not sure if it's the same one as the other week but it was in the same area. Again on hot and spicy luncheon meat. Tomorrow is my no fishing day as the wife wants to do the weekly shop. Thursday I'll be back out with more hot and spicy luncheon meat thanks to B&M stores. I usually only fish from dawn to midday and a bit longer on Sundays depending on the fish and weather, coming home only for the roast.

Lucky to be able to fish when i want but unlucky in health. I've just loved getting out there since the age of 8. In my teens, i spent more time fishing than at school. Even though it was only in and around Putney on the Thames i enjoyed it when there were only Eels to be caught. My teachers knew if i wasn't at school bunking off, i was on the bank at Putney. Sometimes they would come and find me and take me back to class.

I understand Iain and I am sure your ability to fish everyday is tinged with the worry of your health!:) I hope I can fish for many years to come and improve!;)

A quiet day yesterday, arrived at the fishery at twelve thirty, apart from one chap on one of the ponds, we were the only ones there, walked down and picked the same swims as Thursday, just swapping over swims for a change, after five minutes it started raining, only light but it only stopped once, for about thirty minutes, till we left at nine o clock, seeing this we decided to put two carp rods out, and sit under the brollys to keep dry.

Very quiet, probably due to the heavy rain on Sunday night, as its spring fed, all the fresh water, cools things down, and seems to put them off, we had a couple of decent bream each, about five pounds, I had a dropped run which was i think a carp, then I had a good common of fourteen pounds nine ounces, and mick had a cracking tench of over three pounds, and that was it.

Can't fish this Thursday, I have to take the wife to a hospital appointment, hoping to get out this Sunday, ?

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Didnt think I'd get out this week what with various stuff and the forecast lousy for Wednesday which looked like my only really free day....but TBF was out on Monday and broke his crucian duck with a fish a gnats under 3 lb. Well....I'm not having that so with apologies to "The Boy" whose birthday it was yesterday I decided to take a chance on the weather and have an afternoon on the lake.

Arrived to find the place fairly quiet which, given the forecast rain, didn't surprise me and those that were there were struggling a bit. Spoke to one guy and his mate who'd been there overnight and had only had a couple of tench and crucians between them...none worthy of particular note. They'd had the odd indication all morning but hadn't had a fish for hours. That didn't surprise me as this place is looking very much like an afternoon water.

Anyway...they packed and I thought it would be rude not to try and exploit their feed so I dropped in on one of their swims. It was 90 minutes before I had any interest...a tench of around 4lb. An hour later another decent bite and this one didnt tear off so I was thinking crucian and so it proved. Even better it was the fish I'd been after at 3lb-1 and a bit ounces. I bumped another shortly afterwards and then it went quiet.

Around 5 ish a guy dropped in next to me who'd driven from Herefordshire for a 48 hour session.
"Have you seen the forecast for Wednesday?" I asked.
"No...why ?" he said.
"I think you might get a bit wet"

Anyway...he set to building his nest for the night amid much hammering and banging before finally casting in. 20 minutes later he's away and its a crucian of 3lb 6 oz.:eek:mg:

I must try making a lot more noise I think.....seems to work for some people.

I added two more tench [the best around 5lb] and another beautiful rudd of about 1-4 but inexplicably missed 3 decent runs. Whether the fish were not really having it or my rig is not quite right I dont know but its got me thinking and I have a few modifications in mind.

About 7 the wind died and the lake went flat calm. Matey next door had a baby tench and I had just the one more take which again I missed for no reason I can think of. The forecast rain didn't really amount to much although in true Skippy fashion the weather fairy saved the heaviest downpour for just as I was packing up.

M25 was a breeze going home [and going for once] so got home in time to see United lose and to enjoy the fag end slice of Jacko's bithday pizza.

Despite acheiving my 3lb target I feel a bit deflated today. I feel I should have done better than I did from the chances I had but the beauty of being a man of leisure now is that I can go back and have another go whenever I damn well like !

I haven't posted for a few weeks, essentially because there's been nothing much to report, other than my having become something of a ninja with roach in the 1 - 3oz bracket  I've had loads over the last 3 sessions. I've had a few other bits as well, namely skimmer to about 2lb & the occasional miniature stripey...

I had an early-ish start on Sunday at the intriguingly named Leg o' mutton dam.

jon-atkinson-albums-st-helens-aa-picture4705-lomd-17-08-06.jpg

Apparently, it's not the easiest of waters on the St Helens card [they stopped holding matches because they were being won by whoever actually caught a fish!] & I've certainly had my share of blanks here but it's a lovely looking water & despite appearances, it's pretty much in the town itself! But just look at it as per Sunday morning - could it look any more 'tenchy'?

It therefore goes without saying that I had plenty of roach of my usual stamp plus a couple of netters, a skimmer of 1lb or so & a tiny perch. Fished mostly on caster but tried reds & soft pellets too. Small (sleeper) maggot feeder managed a solitary roach all session.

The high point of the day was a great crested grebe paddling by which I think pretty much says it all :eek:mg:

Doing 6 days a week at the moment & busy socialising on Sunday so I'll not be on the banks for a bit - I'll be relying on all your reports to get me through!

Tight lines :w

Not been catching enough to keep ya entertained for long.
Small pouting and a few dogfish off the beach down in not so sunny Dorset. Lovely place for sure but we didn't get the best of seaside weather. A very 'dumpy' sea, as a local described it, meant a 20 metres or so band of mashed kelp and swirling sand clouded the entire bay for days. A couple of hours at the start of the flood was all the angling time there was. I had time to stay longer for once but walked away before wasting my energy dragging in half hundredweight of weed every cast.
Few small roach from campsite pond kept my hand in, and I'm looking forward to finding some big uns back home. Is it enough rain to bring 'em out?; too much?;is it cold rain? Probably just get Chub anyway. Summat that pulls back at least.

Went to the canal in Sheffield yesterday evening.

Lets just say it wasn't a good day. My first time there too so it was a little disheartening :(
