Nipped to the local tackle shop and picked up my usual....1pt of red and 1pt of whites all chucked into one bucket.
When I got to the river it was up a bit and looked like it was full of sediment. The air temp was 4.5 but felt much colder as there was a seriously vile wind blowing from the east. Anyhow I hobbled half a mile to my first swim and after about 10 min's my float went under about 80yds down the river, I struck into a fish which turned out to be a small chub. No more bites in that swim after that, so off I limped another half a mile to my next spot, shouldn't have bothered as I caught nowt, not even a bite!
I decided to limp back to the car and go upestream a few hundred yards. As I got to the swim and looked over the bank there was a effin corm sat on my spot where I stand, it had done what looked like a four pint'a of white sloppy milk (shyte) there also. Anyway, I fished for about 10 min's again before the float went under about 45yds downstream, I struck into a solid fish that hugged the bottom as I towed it back upstream for netting. As it got nearer it had other ideas and decided to drive hard into the nearside banks vegetation and I had to hold my arm out and try to keep it out of it. Even though the fish was only just over a rod length away from me it was hard to keep it away from the bank and the pressure I had to put on against it powering into the cover pulled the hook out.....bu££er! I never even saw the fish but I imagine it was a chub of 3 or 4lb.
By this time my hands where actually aching with cold and I couldn't feel my right thumb. Because the chub might have had a friend or two still in my swim I decided to have a few more trotts through and at pretty much the same spot the float dipped under. This time the hook held and it was a chub of around 2lb. That was it, i'd had more than enough and limped back to the wheels where I wiped the rod and reel off and went home....i'm still thawing out now and I think I may have overdone the walking and clambering up and down bankings as my achilles tendon is sore as fookin hell !

These two fish are the only ones I caught and the first tiddly one had a mark on it (a few scales missing vertically up it's side) that looked like a corm had gripped it but as tiddly as it is it was still to big for the corm

You're crackers!:) It was Cold today! I might venture out tomorrow but then again I might not!

Can't argue with that Mike....I think I must be a retard to even consider limping about in that bloody freezin cold wind .

I still have some maggots left and since heavy rain is forecast after tomorrow I might have another hour or two out, but then again I might not, i'll see how strong the wind is, if it's like today i'll be giving it a miss :scared:.

Owe you an apology maggot dangler. I had up loaded that video to my YouTube channel so I could get a link to use in my post. I forgot to change my privacy setting from private to public which was why initially only I could see it. Rectified it now, as you have discovered. Sorry. Pete.

This morning the weather was much nicer than yesterday, although it was several degrees colder, being 2 degrees. It felt warmer because the horrible easterly wind of yesterday had dropped right off and the sun was shining, ideal for trotting :).
I still had some maggots left over from yesterday and a few from several weeks ago mixed in em which even shrunken in size they where still good enough for chub.
I arrived at the river at 12.30pm and when I got out of the car the thermometer told me it was 2.5 degrees but that bloody vicious easterly wind was back, and more vicious than yesterday!
Anyhow, I started fishing and after several trotts through I hooked a decent chub but I lost it to a hook pull as I was sliding it over the net, then I lost another later in the session as it did that canny trick only chub seem so good at, it left my hook in an object only a rod length away from me. Those where the only two fish I lost in the session.
That vicious wind combined with the temp of 2.5 degrees was seriously horrible . My hands were hurting too much and I even said out loud to myself "this is gonna' make me ill ffs", so I wrapped up at 2pm. I landed 16 chub in that hour and a half which is a good number considering the time period I fished. The fish hadn't stopped feeding when I came away, I just walked away after I plopped the last fish in.
I took a quick snap of several of the fish, just for this post really.....

Nice chub Ian! What's the verdict on your new rod? Is it now your favourite?

Thanks Mike, they where nice fish.
Which one Mike, the daiwa? I used that one yesterday and today I used a 13ft accy plus.
The accy is one of my firm favourites as i've really tested it's metal over a few years now....imo the acolytes are twithout doubt the best float rods ever made, except for the normarks ;).
The 14ft daiwa proved its worth this year and i'm yet to give the 13ft daiwa a proper workout, although it feels good. It has a fast action which is my preference andi'm sure it will have the power I want for barbel.

I meant the Daiwa Ian! As it costs a lot more than the Acolyte it should be good! I hope it is!:)

Yeaph, it's a good rod and yes it is a more expensive rod. I think the acolytes are a really good price, a bargain even.... probably because of where they're made and the lower production costs. The daiwa rods I have are made over here.
Imo the acolyte blows the daiwa out.
As I say I think the acolyte is the best float rod i've ever used bar the normarks

I was up for another zed trip yesterday but events put paid to that one but I was free by noon so a kwik grab of my lure gear nd a flask of tea I shot down to a local water in the hope that a pike or perch wanted to take its chances against a slowly retrieved spinner or rubber shad.
Like last week the shad lasted all of five minutes before hitting some unseen immovable lump of mystery???
The little spinner lived a charmed life afterwards, two snags and two successful free ups-- I was on a roll !.
Three forty pm-- twenty or so minutes before dark and out of the blue I had two jack pike in successive casts.
My fingers were numb with cold by then so I was away back to the car and home feeling I had rescued a little of my day.

I await a post from some brave soul who ventured out today! It's truly horrible here with gale force winds and driving rain and sleet! No fish would have wished to leave the depths!:)

I’ve just been looking at the news and lots of areas in the south west and Wales are without power due to the freezing wind and rain and even some snow.

I thought that I was bad off due to my boiler packing in and having no central heating until Wednesday but I seriously feel sympathy for the poor buggers who can’t even plug a portable heater on and are freezing and can’t even boil a kettle.

Kettle

Mad? I’d be extremely peed off to spend a day on the beach freezing to death for a few whiting and then getting home to find no fuel to cook them.

Braved the cold today went to the club pool .

Bit slow for the first hour but there was still ice on the surface once that melted it woke up a tad first out was a nice wild carp of around 4 lbs followed by 8 nice perch all around the 2 to 2.5lb that was it then it dried up i was getting cold and running out of maggots so pack up and head home .

That pool is producing some nice perch this year not sure how quickly Perch grow but it would say it wont be long before the start topping 3lbs could be interesting next year or so ...
