Pete that is a pole sticking out of the pool with black plimsole lines at, I guess, 1' intervals! At that location the depth was 5' so if the pole was submerged it would be 6' deep! Well spotted though! :)

Be careful, what I have read maybe incorrect but allegedly people have been nicked for shining lasers at wildlife.

I've never heard of that, though I have heard of people using them running into trouble when the water is close to a runway or aircraft approach.

Seth49 recommended a laser pointer which I bought! If you aim it at the birds head and it's seen the bird goes away . It is a low power laser which is harmless. Useful if said bird is close and persistent. Any distance away however and its becomes, well almost as impossible as catching a net full of tench!

Seth hasn't posted for a while ; I hope he is ok.

A loaf of bread strategically placed as a decoy?

This. And use dark groundbaits and hook baits. I was hooking lots of coots and ducks until I changed, I still get the occasional duck on dead reds unfortunately. Corn and light-coloured hook baits make for a very frustrating day on the reservoir I’m fishing on at the moment.

A harmless one I’d be interested in, got a link Mike?

First coarse fish for a long time, a day ticket on some big old gravels pits near Rye, I fished the smallest, must have been over a 1000 yds long and 20 yards wide. After tench and brm but first fish a lovely mirror carp about 8/9lb. Float fishing with some posh brown bread, cost £1.80 for a small loaf, that's all they had but took some sweetcorn and luncheon meat as well. Only been in about 5 mins and the rod wrapped round, on my float rod and 4lb line gave me hell of a fight. I enjoyed it because had forgotten what that was like but I didn't want anymore which was just as well as only small Rudd after that, a few on sweetcorn; but the brown bread proved to be the best bait all round.
I was the only angler on the lake which was very pleasant, a male Marsh Harrier appeared twice over the trees on the opposite bank and a cuckoo was cuckooing most of the day, nice for half an hour but was wishing it would shut up after that. Plenty to like about the place though but maybe a bit of palaver free sea fishing today chucking a float off the sea wall with not a tree or twig in sight, I am sure I don't have to explain that!
No pics, my phone was very low on charge.

Good to read Mark.
Thanks John; "fascinating" to be out fishing! By the way did not sea fish today, a cold north wind and didn't fancy it in the end but I did have a walk down there. The May water seems to have cleared out now, about 10 anglers fishing, one feathering but not a sausage, no one seemed to have caught anything, sea still too cold I reckon, the nights are still very cool. However, my regional/county fishing paper reports some school bass around which is not unusual this time of year but I reckon once the sea warms up a bit some bigger bass may show up. You did a lot better than I did last year spinning so I might try that a bit more myself when it all picks up a bit. The paper reported a lot of Rays about though, Thornbacks mainly I think but it also reported on a big no show cod winter again; sad state of affairs. I might get down in the week depending on a few factors, work, wind and tides etc. Hope I have a better year than last which was pretty bad.

Club fixture today on a farm lake in rural Bucks. 12 of us fished this relatively new to us club venue.
The lake is mainly open water but has an inlet which is short and narrow. I drew on the inlet (again!) With a good stock of roach, Rudd, perch, tench, a few carp it makes a pleasant match venue.

Punch was the most successful bait for the roach today with worm accounting for the perch.
No tench or carp were caught by anyone, I think they were busy spawning as there was lots of splashing in the big reed beds.
The maximum depth is just 3’ so tackling it is pretty straightforward. Most used pole with a few on the waggler.
I caught roach mainly on pole and punch but also had a few perch on worm over chopped worm.
As often happens the first half hour was bite a chuck then it gets very patchy after that.
Winner had 6:15:8. 2nd 5:12:0 3rd 5:10:0.
I had 3:10:0.. for 8th .

Evening all, not posted for a while, three weeks in Philippines followed by IT hassles and then a trip south for a friends funeral, so only been fishing twice; unsuccessfully.

Should really have taken a rod to the Philippines. Went to the north for a few days for wedding of stepdaughters friends, all off one evening the 20 miles to Vigan for a meal and a night out and en route crossed this

No idea if it was salt, fresh or brackish ( a couple of miles from the sea) or what was in it but there were a least two Red Backed Fish Eagles working it. Could have been a case of "leave me here and pick me up on the way back with a doggie bag"...

Back to Skye and off for the first cliff scramble of the year to Rubha Hunish. Lovely walk in, aim for the notch between the two higher points on the horizon

and then follow the path straight down the cliff to the headland below..

Faced with a heavy swell so a lot of the better spots on the front and East of the point were a bit too risky so gave it a couple of hours from one of the higher ledges, not a sniff after going through the full lure repertoire

Moved round to the sheltered West side , not usually as good (shallower and out of the tide run) and a similar lack of activity, looks like the pollack are a bit late this year

No sign of any dolphins or whales for which the headland is noted, just a couple of seals but loads of gannets, guillemots etc and a couple of Great Skuas which thankfully didn't seem to be nesting so no need for a hard hat...

A couple of days later, and a trip to the west of the island to a Thornback mark. Phone battery very low so only took one pic , of this little chap which saved my blank taking a strip of mackerel as big as itself

Not my most successful run of results.

Great report, that critter must be a contender for the mini species challenge.

That does look fun Neil, what sort of lure are you using for those lovely Rudd?
